Plan · Relocating to New Zealand
Moving to New Zealand?
Let’s Help You Understand the Money Side of Life Here.

Moving countries is exciting. It can also be financially overwhelming.
A new banking system. Different tax rules. Different housing costs. Different lending rules. Different insurance. Different employment arrangements. Different terminology. And a completely different cost of living.
Important: Immigration & Visa Services
EMPIXO does not provide immigration advice, immigration services or visa assistance. Our Expat Financial Mentoring service is focused solely on helping people understand and prepare for the financial side of living in New Zealand.
We do not:
- Advise on New Zealand visas or immigration pathways
- Determine whether you are eligible to live or work in New Zealand
- Complete or assist with immigration applications
- Recommend visa categories
- Provide advice about work rights or immigration status
- Represent clients in immigration matters
If you require immigration or visa advice, you should work directly with Immigration New Zealand or an appropriately licensed immigration adviser or other authorised professional.
Your immigration arrangements remain completely separate from EMPIXO.
Who This Is For
Relocating to New Zealand
For people who already have, or are independently arranging, the appropriate right to live or work in New Zealand, and want help understanding the financial environment they are moving into.
We can help you learn about areas such as:
But we don’t advise you on whether you can move to New Zealand.
Starting Again in a New Country Is a Big Deal
We understand the challenge of living in another country. Even simple things can suddenly become complicated.
Which bank should I use? How do I get paid? What does my payslip mean? How does tax work? What does KiwiSaver mean? How expensive is housing? Should I rent or eventually buy? How does borrowing work in New Zealand? Will my overseas credit history matter? What insurance do people normally consider? What happens to the money, investments, property or debt I still have overseas?
And perhaps the biggest question: how do I actually make life work financially in New Zealand?
You shouldn’t have to learn everything by making expensive mistakes.
Who’s Helping You
A Kiwi Financial Mentor With a Global Perspective
EMPIXO is a New Zealand financial education and mentoring business with a global outlook. Our team brings experience across banking, lending and Financial Mentoring in New Zealand, while also understanding what it feels like to live abroad and navigate life between countries.
That combination matters. Because this isn’t just about explaining what a bank account is. It’s about helping you understand how the New Zealand financial system fits together, and then helping you work out how your life fits into it.
Born from New Zealand experience. Shaped by a global perspective.
Topics We Cover
What Can We Help You Understand?
Banking in New Zealand
Everyday and savings accounts, online banking, debit and credit cards, automatic payments, structuring your banking around your income and expenses, and questions to ask when choosing banking services.
The goal isn’t to choose a bank for you. It’s to help you understand how the system works and what questions to ask.
Income, Employment & Tax
Gross vs net income, PAYE, KiwiSaver deductions, everyday budgeting from a NZ salary, understanding your payslip, building savings and emergency reserves, and managing income across countries.
Understand first. Get specialist tax advice where needed.
Housing & Living in NZ
Renting, bonds, weekly rent, utilities, household and transport costs, saving for a home, deposits, New Zealand mortgages, interest rates, rates and ownership costs, and the financial reality of buying versus renting.
Where personalised mortgage advice is required, that moves into regulated advice with an appropriately authorised adviser.
Credit, Borrowing & Debt
Credit cards, personal loans, car finance, Buy Now Pay Later, mortgage lending, interest, repayments, credit history, good and bad debt, managing existing overseas debt, and building healthy borrowing habits.
Don’t just ask “can I borrow it?” Ask “what does this decision do to my financial future?”
KiwiSaver & Retirement
What KiwiSaver is, how it works, how it relates to retirement, what happens to retirement savings you already have overseas, and how investing fits into the picture.
Personal recommendations about specific KiwiSaver providers or funds sit outside Mentoring and require regulated advice.
Insurance & Protection
Car, contents, home, health, life and income protection insurance, and business insurance, covering why different forms of protection exist and where insurance may fit your wider picture.
We don’t use mentoring to recommend a particular policy or provider.
The Cost of Living Reality
One of the hardest things about moving countries is translating your old idea of money into your new reality. A salary that sounds high may feel very different once you account for:
Housing + Food + Transport + Tax + Insurance + Children + Debt + Saving + Lifestyle
We’ll help you put the numbers together. Not somebody else’s numbers. Your numbers. So you can begin answering:
- What does a comfortable life in New Zealand actually cost us?
- How much can we realistically save?
- What can we afford?
- What financial goals make sense?
Bringing Money With You?
Your financial life doesn’t necessarily reset to zero when you cross the border. You may still have property overseas, investments, retirement accounts, bank accounts, business interests, debt, family commitments, or income from another country.
That can make your situation more complicated. EMPIXO can help you map the bigger picture, understand what questions need answering and identify where specialist New Zealand or overseas advice may be required.

Common Questions
Immigration & Visa Questions
Can EMPIXO help me get a New Zealand visa or work visa?
No. EMPIXO does not provide immigration advice or immigration services. We don’t assess visa eligibility, recommend visa pathways, assist with immigration applications or advise you on your legal right to work in New Zealand. Our role begins on the financial education and mentoring side.
If you’re independently planning or completing your relocation, we can help you understand what living financially in New Zealand may involve, including banking, housing, KiwiSaver, borrowing, insurance, cost of living and building your financial systems. For immigration matters, you’ll need to use the appropriate immigration authority or authorised professional.
Can you tell me whether I’m allowed to work in New Zealand?
No. Questions about visa conditions, immigration status and legal work rights are outside the scope of EMPIXO Financial Mentoring. You need to establish those matters independently before relying on employment income in your financial planning.
Once your position is established, we can help you work through questions such as “I’m earning $120,000 in New Zealand, what could our household financial life look like?” That’s an EMPIXO conversation. “Does my visa allow me to work for this employer?” That’s not an EMPIXO conversation.
An Important Boundary
Education First, Advice When You’re Ready
Expat Financial Mentoring is financial education, coaching and mentoring, not personalised regulated financial advice. We won’t recommend a specific bank, mortgage, KiwiSaver fund, investment or insurance policy through Mentoring. Where you need country-specific legal, tax or regulated financial advice, you’ll need an appropriately qualified professional in the relevant jurisdiction.
Start Before You Land
Tell us where you’re at: considering the move, already booked, or recently arrived, and we’ll help you figure out where to start on the financial side.
